7th March is World Book Day. Since the day first began over 25 years ago to encourage children and young people to discover the world of reading, it has grown into a global movement. Below we have included some resources for books in accessible formats for visually impaired people.
EasyReader
EasyReader is a free app available for Apple and Android. It makes reading more accessible for people who are visually impaired.
With EasyReader you can access a vast and diverse selection of books from RNIB Libraries, Project Gutenberg, Bookshare, and Calibre Audio. You can follow the audio with a text version of the book. The text can be customised in a number of ways to enhance your experience: adjust and magnify the text, change colour schemes, synchronise text with speech, or just use the speech settings alone.
Oxfordshire County Library
The Oxfordshire County Library has a vast catalogue of eBooks available through OverDrive or BorrowBox which you can download directly onto your Apple or Android device for up to three weeks.
The library provides access to eMagazines and eNewspapers from UK publications and from around the world.
Each county library location also includes a collection of large-print books.
RNIB Talking Books
RNIB’s Talking Book service is completely free and gives access to thousands of books in numerous formats including digital download, CD, USB stick, or braille.
The Talking Books catalogue is vast; the books are unabridged and of the highest quality to make for the best possible reading experience.
Amazon Audible
Amazon’s Audible service offers access to Amazon’s immense audiobook catalogue. The service can be accessed by signing up to Amazon’s monthly subscription of £7.99 and also includes a wide variety of fascinating podcasts.
