Technology Officer – Job Description

Technology plays a major part in life today. Many blind and partially sighted people are not accessing tech or utilising the tech they have; we need you to help them out.

You will be joining the team at an exciting time of change as our services grow and expand across the county. You will take a lead on our newly launched Get Online Get Connected project which aims to give visually impaired people the skills and confidence to get online.

We provide a range of services across Oxfordshire including:

Job Title: Technology Officer

Hours: 35 hours per week, worked over Monday-Friday

Salary: £22,000-£26,000 dependent on experience

Annual Leave: 25 days, plus bank holidays

Contract Type: Permanent (6-month probationary period)

Reporting to: Service Delivery Manager

Base: Office/home-based with frequent travel across Oxfordshire.

Job Purpose:

To launch and lead our Get Online Get Connected Project. The aim is to empower visually impaired people to get online through a series of workshops, 1-1 training sessions, focus groups and training and supporting our tech buddy volunteers.

Duties: 

Workshops and Peer Support

  • Design a workshop plan and create materials
  • Promote, deliver, and assess 4-6 workshops a year throughout the county
  • Set up a new online tech support group for attendees of workshops and training. Facilitate discussion topics and arrange monthly meetings.

One to one training

  • Design a series of training programmes for various assistive technologies
  • Deliver 1-1 training sessions at our resource centre and in the community

Tech Buddy Programme

  • With the support of the Volunteer Coordinator set up a new tech buddy programme which provides volunteer support for those who have attended workshops and training
  • Provide ongoing support and training to tech buddy volunteers

Knowledge sharing and development

  • Write tech updates for our newsletter, website, and social media channels on a regular basis  
  • Connect and share with other professionals in the field
  • Attend relevant training and stay up to date in the field of accessible technology for visually impaired people.

Recording and reporting

  • With the support of the Service Delivery Manager, create and test good recording systems for the Get Online Get Connected Project
  • Ensure all interactions and contacts are recorded on our CRM system
  • Report on progress and keep to set KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
  • Work with the Communications Officer to share good stories of change for those accessing the service

Other duties:

  • Attend and contribute to team meetings
  • Attend relevant training
  • Be an ambassador for MyVision and help us to reach out, grow and continue to support visually impaired people across Oxfordshire
  • Other reasonable duties set out by your line manager and Chief Executive
  • There may, on occasion, be a need to work outside normal hours e.g., weekends and evenings

This role is a rare and exciting opportunity for an individual with assistive tech knowledge and the ability to teach others. You will be driven by our mission to get more blind and partially sighted people online and connected with the community around them. This role may also be known as a Technology Trainer or Assistive Technology Coordinator, or Accessible Technology Coordinator

Person Specification

Essential skills, experience, and knowledge:

  1. High level experience and knowledge of technology
  2. Experience of providing tech-based training both one-to-one and in groups
  3. Strong digital skills including Office 365
  4. Good administrative skills
  5. Good presentation skills
  6. Ability to travel independently across the county, whether with your own vehicle, or support through Access to Work.

Desirable:

  1. Knowledge of assistive technology
  2. Lived experience of visual impairment or other disabilities
  3. Experience of working within a disability charity, local or national
  4. Experience of working with volunteers

  2. Good communicator
  3. Creative thinker and problem solving
  4. A supportive team player
