Support Worker – Job Description and Person Specifications

We are currently looking for support worker to assist a visually impaired member of our team travel to work and assist with their duties.

MyVision Oxfordshire is a charity supporting visually impaired people to live independent and active lives.

Job Title: Support Worker

Hours: 35 hours per week, worked over 4 Days (Monday-Thursday)

Hourly Rate: £12 per Hour (£21,840 per year)

Annual Leave: 25 days, plus bank holidays

Contract Type: Fixed term for 12 Months (3-month probationary period) with likely extension

Reporting to: Service Delivery Manager

Base: Office based at our centre in Oxford, with some home/remote working and travel around Oxfordshire.

Job Purpose:

To support a visually impaired member of our team travel to and from work and assist them in their work duties.

Duties: 

  • Provide transport to and from their home in Banbury to our Oxford office and to appointments around Oxfordshire. Mileage paid at 45p per mile.
  • To assist with day-to-day administration tasks
  • To provide support in appointments within the resource centre and on home visits or doing workshops.
  • To assist navigating their way around unfamiliar environments when out and about.

Other duties:

  • Attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • Attend relevant training.
  • Be an ambassador for MyVision and help us to reach out, grow and continue to support visually impaired people across Oxfordshire
  • Other reasonable duties set out by the Service Delivery Manager
  • There may, on occasion, be a need to work outside normal hours e.g. weekends and evenings

This role will be challenging, but full of purpose, you’ll be joining a supportive and driven team – many of whom have lived experience of sight loss.

Person Specification

We expect candidates to evidence how they meet the criteria in their covering letter. This can be through work, volunteering, and your personal life.

Essential skills, experience, and knowledge:

  1. Full clean driving licence with access to own vehicle
  2. Know how to or be willing to learn to guide and support a visually impaired person.
  3. Good communication skills.
  4. Ability to build a trusting relationship with our colleague.
  5. Punctual and organised

Desirable:

  1. Experience of visual impairment or other disabilities
  2. Experience of working within a disability charity, local or national
  3. Ideally based in or around the Banbury area

Personal Qualities

  1. The ability to work closely with someone.
  2. Friendly personality and have a good sense of humour
  3. Reliable
  4. A supportive team player
  5. Openness to learning new skills

This role would ideally suit someone with experience in social care or the disability sector, but we’re open to hearing from candidates from a range of backgrounds.
