The Amazon Echo device range is both a revolutionary voice control system as well as an affordable gadget that makes it accessible to the masses. As the logistic giant continues to release new models and capabilities, it is becoming more and more a tool for blind and visually impaired people worldwide.
So who is Alexa and what does she do?
Alexa is the name for the voice assistant that comes in Amazon devices. Through the microphones that are built in to their products, you can wake them up by saying “Alexa”. At this point the device will light up and make a sound and you can now ask it to perform tasks and answer questions.
There is a very long list of what Alexa can do. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Audio such as music, podcasts and radio. Try saying “Alexa, play BBC Radio 4.”.
- Basic tasks such as setting timers and alarms. Try saying “Alexa, count down ten minutes”.
- Special skills such as news updates, creating shopping lists and reading out recipes.
- Answering questions such as “what is the weather like today?” or “What is the population of Uganda?”.
You can even ask it what is on television tonight.
On top of this, you can connect your Alexa device to a range of appliances around the home and control them with your voice, from light switches to dish washers! This means that you can even use them to control devices that may not otherwise be accessible.
These small and cost-effective devices are so capable, yet simple to use as they are completely controlled by your voice, which ideally places them for blind and visually impaired people.
